Philosophy and Art As Research

'The following are among the prejudices about craft knowledge that I have identified:

  • Craft knowledge is merely mechanical.
  • Craft knowledge can be learned as and when you need it.
  • Craft knowledge and 'having idea' or 'being creative' are separate activities.
  • Craft knowledge is separable from making aesthetic judgements.
  • Craft knowledge is rule-based and rules conflict with personal creativity.
  • Craft knowledge is about forming habits, and habits also conflict with or inhibit creativity.'

(Dormer, 1994).
